On the contrary - customer service is drilled into staff by rote; through manuals, trainers and job-shadowing. Your definition of 'service' is simply old-fashioned and unprofitable. As any person who has worked in a high-volume, low-margin sales or service industry knows, the purpose of modern customer service is not to make customers happy. The goal in any modern corporation is to satisfy the bare minimum standard that will make the customer purchase a product, or after it has your money, to go away without receiving a refund. Providing support and assistance ('holding a customer's hand like a loving parent') is unprofitable, and the modern sociopathic corporation has plenty of documented evidence to prove it. Why do you think every company on the planet loves the Internet?

'You mean we can provide the facade of civility and care to our customers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.. by machine.. and making them solve a problem without contacting us is considered empowerment? WHERE DO WE SIGN UP??'

There are certainly still companies that believe in serving customers' needs - and there are still a minority of customers who respect that and believe in it. However, by and large society has been trained to judge the market by the solitary factor of raw price, and as long as this is the case that is the only factor that will matter to a corporation in the long term.

The problem is that customer service isn't taught anymore. Companies need to train their employees and pop quiz them now and then. I worked at Gameworks for two years while in college and they spent two full weeks on customer service even before I spent my first day on the FLOOR. Its a must.
